The deeper story
Volcano, ice and a remembered glen
Glencoe’s severe profile was set in motion by volcanic activity hundreds of millions of years ago and sharpened by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The surrounding National Nature Reserve also carries a human story: Coire Gabhail is associated with the 1692 Massacre of Glencoe, when local people used the hidden valley while fleeing the attack.
