The view
West Sands is a deliberately spacious kind of Scottish view. The long beach stretches north from St Andrews, leaving room for tide lines, a low horizon and the town’s landmark towers behind the Links.
The atmosphere changes more with the sea and weather than with elevation. At low tide, wet sand catches the sky; when the wind is up, the beach becomes an open edge between the golfing landscape, the North Sea and the wide Fife coast.
The deeper story
West Sands is approximately two miles of sandy coast beside the historic Links. It is not a static foreground for the town: waves, wind and tidal movement continually reshape the beach, and coastal research has documented how this wider stretch of Fife shore changes over time. That moving shoreline is part of the view’s character.
