The view
Calton Hill makes Edinburgh’s skyline legible. The Old Town ridge, castle and spires run west from here, while Arthur’s Seat rises to the south-east and the Firth of Forth opens the city towards the coast.

The deeper story
Calton Hill is a volcanic remnant associated with the same ancient landscape as Arthur’s Seat. Its National Monument was founded in 1822; work began in 1826 and stopped in 1829, leaving the famous unfinished colonnade. The hill has formed part of Edinburgh’s World Heritage setting since 1995.
