The deeper story
A historic ridge, renewed for the city
The present red-sandstone castle was designed by William Burn in the 1830s, on a site that had hosted earlier medieval and later defensive structures. In 2026 the rebuilt north tower viewpoint became part of the Inverness Castle Experience, reopening the ridge as a public place to look across the city and its river.
